When we interviewed the model Iskra Lawrence a few months back, we largely acted like total nerds who had never communicated with a woman before.
However, we also managed to get her take on the vague industry term 'plus-size', a label that has previously been applied to Iskra.
"Because I represent women, by calling me plus-size you call 60-70% of women plus size and they don't want to be labelled like that."
For Iskra, the term is too broad, so it condescends women who are a perfectly normal size. It's why the fashion industry sets an unreasonable standard of beauty, a standard that once led to Iskra being rejected by an agent because her 'hips were too big.'
Fortunately, these unrealistic perceptions appear to be changing. Iskra has just been made the face of Aerie, the lingerie line of global fashion mega-brand American Eagle. She smashed a few photos up on Instagram to mark the occasion.
This is a huge platform, so here's to Iskra changing perceptions in the industry.
